REVIEW: CRACK THE WHIP BY JENNY MAY

Crack The Whip (Dark Days Ranch 3)
Georgina’s seen both the good and the bad that comes from having mates. The love the bonding creates lasts a lifetime. But that’s just it. After she watches her mother die of a broken heart, the anxiety Georgina develops over bonding to Damien and Austin is well warranted. Can she get over her fear, or will she keep the pact with her brother that they’re better off alone?
Damien and Austin know they have to bring Georgina around to being their mate. After all, Damien sees the perfect submissive that Georgina is, and he wants her to embrace the life she’s been ordered to live by their alpha. But as things heat up between the three of them, a plea for Damien to take over The Big C leaves him with a tough decision. Does he try to become the alpha he’s always known himself to be, and risk making Georgina’s fear of losing one of her mates a possible reality? Or does he walk away from it all and face the consequences?

Review:

Georgie is very reluctant to develop her mating bond with Damien and Austin. Once her father died, Georgie and her brother watched her mother wither and die soon after. Not wanting to be like their mother, Georgie and her brother take a vow to never bond with a mate. However, Damien isn't going to take no for an answer, and Georgie likes it that way. Her brother's reaction turns very violent. Georgie's now in danger of being killed by her own brother over her broken vow.

Damien has been working security for the Dark Days Ranch pack and others. He's worked alone for years, and now it's time to settle down with his two mates. Convincing Georgie takes a little more effort, but that's not a problem for our hero. He's the Dom her submissive side can't wait to bow down to. But will he put being a reluctant a Alpha and take over a neighboring mismanages pack?

Austin is a wolf and use to having to follow his Alpha. What he doesn't count on is being submissive to Damien in bed. The threesome takes some time to get use to and he has a part to play in getting Georgie to accept both his and Damien's love and affection. But her brother is a problem. Would she blame him and let grief come between them if Austin is forced to kill her brother to protect her?

Crack the Whip has several interesting complex sub-plots going on at the same time. Georgie not only has to deal with Damien's potential fight to the death but also with her struggle to not be like her mother. She's ordered by the pack alpha to live with Austin and Damien, and although part of her can't wait to submit to Damien's demands, she really wants to bolt like a spooked horse. Then there's Damien, he has his own internal conflicts. He was born to be an Alpha in his own right. He just doesn't want the job. What would happen to Georgie if her worst fears were realized with his death? It's a lot of him to consider. Then there's Austin. He's a good fighter and strong wolf, but he's not yet in touch with his submissive side.

I enjoyed watching the characters work out their individual problems and finally find their happy medium. The bondage wasn't intense, but it certainly was hot! This one turned out to be a real page turner. I'm not sure I call this one a safe work read, but a quiet moment alone with a glass of wine would make for an interesting evening. Crack the Whip gets 4 stars!

REVIEW: BREAK ME IN BY JENNY MAY

Break Me In (Dark Days Ranch 1)
Myles Baker thinks she has everything under control. That is, until she meets her mates, Logan Harrison and Ty. Paired with a human, and member of the enemy pack, Myles knows that things are about to get complicated for Dark Days. But that’s only the beginning of her problems. There’s a scandal that lies deep within Dark Days Ranch, and for years Myles and her brother have been able to hide it. But it’s only a matter of time before everything is exposed, and the true leader of Dark Days is revealed.
Between Ty and Logan, they’re quickly learning the secrets to their new pack. But they have trouble of their own. Logan isn’t who he seems, and Ty is dealing with his evil ex-Alpha, Samone. Can these three overcome their problems before everything catches up with them, or will Samone, the Alpha of Whiskey River Ranch, accomplish her take down of Dark Days?

Review:

What happens when you throw hot cowboys and sexy werewolves together? Jenny May's Dark Days Ranch series, that's what. And what a combination it is!

Myles and her Alpha brother have been keeping a dirty little secret for years. He's the big, tough alpha of the Dark Days Ranch werewolf pack, but is he really? Myles is his elder twin and, by rights, the packs Alpha. Magic may have ordained Myles an alpha, bu tit forgot to check with her as to whether or not she wanted the job. No one else seems to notice, as long as she keeps a lid on her power. But how long will that last when she finds her mates?

Ty is from a neighboring enemy pack. He, too, was born a werewolf and know Myles for what she really is. He's been a ladies man for just as long. When the magic draws him to Myles, he's happy to plot a way to take her back to his pack. He doesn't count on the magic drawing him together with Myles plus one. His other problem lies in what to do if she refuses to go with him. His pack isn't likely to take to kindly to a defection.

Logan is a human who happens to work on the Dark Days Ranch. He loves breaking horses and working with animals. He keeps a secret of his own. Something deep inside of him speaks to the animals. He knows just what they need to bend them to his will. Myles is no exception. The magic chooses him to be the third mate. One little problem. He's always been interested in men. Being attracted to Myles has throw him for a loop.

I enjoyed the complex dynamic for the relationships. Logan and Ty both have some soul searching and exploring to do. Myles is a virgin being guided by magic she has no control over. There are a few more secrets that make this an interesting read and will provide a number of plot twists and turns. The sex is hot, the story pace is quick, and the ending is just as satisfying. I'm giving Break Me In a full 4 stars!

CHARACTER INTERVIEWS:
 Casey Keen
I’ll Be Damned, Book #1 of the Anna Wolfe Series
1- What is the name your main character?
Anna Wolfe
2-What kind of trouble does he/she get into?
Her sister is kidnapped and this is just the beginning of Anna’s journey and battle in the supernatural realm. Trouble chases her because of what she really is - a witch.
3- Why is this story different from others?
My story is different in that the plot has more unique elements. Anna’s a normal individual; until her world is suddenly shattered with the truth of what she really is - a Grand Witch - is exposed. I think readers can relate to her predicament with regards to life throwing a major curve ball.

Character questions:
1- If your main character were an animal, what kind would he/she be?
Gray Wolf - she is loyal to herself and her “pack” and fierce when she needs to be!
2- Is your character hot or cold?
She’s hot. Everything she does is for the safety of others.
3- Who or what does your character love?
She loves her family and being the owner of the coffee shop Déjà Brew in Savannah, GA.

Interview for Cerulean

Background questions:

What is the name of your main character?

Since my main character considers her given name an oddity and an embarrassment, let’s just call her Chey.

In Chey’s world, people inherit names chosen by their ancestors. When the first pioneers moved underwater, they selected names based on what they missed most from the Surface. Most residents chose names from nature, but Chey’s great-grandfather was more… unconventional.

What kind of trouble does she get into?

Chey wants to follow the rules and conform to the others in her community, but she has begun to experience the depression that plagues her people. When she engages in rebellious behavior, such as sneaking into the open ocean, the exhilaration of the experiences fight off her looming depression.

Chey faces the impossible bind. Does she remain obedient, at the risk of succumbing to her depression, or does she continue to engage in acts that could be considered traitorous in nature?

Why is this story different from others?

Cerulean is a dystopia, and the novella features many typical dystopian elements: the remnants of a ravaged world, set in the near future; an authoritarian government system, with a hint of corruption; and a young heroine, not content to go along with the status quo.

Where it veers away from other dystopians is the setting. Cerulean explores what life might be like if the only safe places left in the world were in the oceans. Could humans adapt to an underwater life? What unexpected repercussions could come from spending one’s entire life under the water?

Having a dystopia set underwater created an interesting dichotomy between the beauty and wonders within the ocean and the harsh reality of Chey’s life.

Character questions:

If your main character were an animal, what kind would he/she be?

In my dystopian world, humans have partnered with the dolphins to survive. They have adapted Dolphin-speak in order to communicate in their underwater world and have created a pairing system to prevent humans from being the dominant species in the ocean. So at first glance, a dolphin seems the obvious choice.

Yet, Chey is fascinated by the whales. She has studied their songs and learned to communicate with them. While she is fluent in several types of Whale-song, her favorite is the subversive lyrics of the Blues. Since Chey often is nonconforming herself, I think she would choose to be a blue whale.

Is your character hot or cold?

Chey is really torn between the familiar cool waters of the ocean and the novelty of sunshine and land. When she is asked to choose between swimming and walking, the pull between her two worlds becomes evident.

Here, along this abandoned beach, the best of two worlds collide. The freedom of gliding through the waters and the joy of running across land; the wonders found within the ocean and the warmth of the sunshine.

“Both,” I decide. We could run down the long stretch of beach, soaking in the sun, then dive into the cool waters while I seek out Haku. Is it greedy to want it all?

Who or what does your character love?

What a tricky question! When the book begins, Chey has lost nearly everyone she ever loved: her best friend, her parents. She only faces more loss as the story progresses. While there’s a romantic element to Cerulean, Chey’s very uncomfortable with touching and connectedness after living in the isolation of her underwater community her entire life. She’s not an insta-love type of heroine.

So, my answer has to be novelty.  Chey takes immense pleasure in the tiniest new experiences. She finds wonder in the mundane. My favorite part of writing Cerulean was looking at the world through the eager eyes of my heroine and describing the ordinary in her poetic voice.

REVIEW: UNDER THE ALPHA'S PROTECTION

Under The Alpha's Protection by Doris O'Connor

Blurb:
Nikita Ashton and Raoul Saint Germain have been friends for five years, so when Nikita is attacked, there is only one place she can run to—straight into Raoul's arms.
Raoul is the Alpha of his pack and he is furious that the woman he loves has been harmed on his territory. Were it not for the fact that Nikita does not believe in anything even remotely paranormal, his wolf would have claimed her aeons ago.
Nikita is in need of tender, loving care, not his baser needs that are threatening to overtake him.
However, when Nikita admits that she knows about his being in the lifestyle, the Dom in him cannot resist the challenge to make her his submissive.
Blissfully happy in their new Dom/sub relationship, everything changes when Nikita is kidnapped. Can Raoul get to her in time to save her life?

Review:
This story made for a good rainy weekend afternoon read. I wasn't warned, however, about the abuse the heroine might endure at the hands of the bad guy. It didn't ruin the story, but I did have to do some section skipping/skimming because of it. Other than that, I didn't have a problem.

Nikita a nice change of pace for a heroine. She's smart, independent, and determined. What she isn't is wafer-thin and perfect. I liked that about her. She wears glasses and has more curves. The best part comes from her falling in love with her friend before the physical contact starts.

Granted I'm a fairly quick reader, but I think this story is easily tucked into a weekend. If your looking for something for those work lunch breaks and aren't worried about anyone looking over your shoulder, this one works. There may be some language a delicate reader might not be comfortable with, but I don't expect a delicate reader would choose a book with a BDSM theme. So curl up with a glass of wine and settle in with this 3.5 star werewolf tale.

Story Excerpt:
"We will have to have a conversation about this warped self-image of yours soon, but now is not the time or the place. You're a beautiful woman, Nikita, and anyone saying otherwise will have me to answer to. Now drop the robe and stop stalling, before I have to drag you to the hospital to get these properly checked over."
Nikita tensed at the mention of the hospital, and he chuckled.
"I'm not going to any damn hospital. You can't make me." She glared at him over her shoulder, and he quirked an eyebrow at her in that irritatingly superior way of his that always turned her insides aflutter. She dropped her gaze to his throat instead and immediately wished she hadn't. This close she could see him swallow, the movement of his Adam's apple strangely erotic, and her fingers itched to trace the veins down to the thatch of dark hair she could just about see in the V of his polo shirt. A shirt that clung to his muscular frame and only served to outline the bulging biceps, as he raised an arm to brush his dark hair out of his eyes. He was in need of a haircut, his hair longer than she had ever seen it, the perfect length to grab hold and…
Nikita bit her lip and shut her eyes for a second at the wayward direction her thoughts were taking.
"You know I hate hospitals. I don't ever want to go back there."
Hospitals meant death and grief, and she had sworn on her mother's death bed that she would never set foot in that place again, if she could help it. Unbidden, the tears fell as they always did when she thought of her mum, her grief still as fresh and raw as it had been two years ago.
Raoul made a rough sound in the back of his throat, and then his hands were cupping her face, his thumbs wiping away her tears.
"I'm sorry, squirt. That was thoughtless of me," he said.
She forced her eyes open, and the quiet compassion she saw in his azure gaze made her cry harder.
"No, I'm sorry. It's been two years. You'd think I wouldn't go into meltdown mode every time the hospital is even mentioned. Whoever said time is a great healer is a blasted liar, and I'm such a goddamn watering pot. Dammit, I'm sorry. That's the second time today I got you all wet."
Raoul laughed—a deep belly rumble that trembled through her until she had no choice but to smile back at him. He always managed to do that to her. One of the many reasons why she loved him.
Her heart clenched painfully, as the truth dawned on her. She did love him, and sometime over the last five years, that love had blossomed and deepened, until she couldn't imagine her life without him in it. Nikita wanted more, so much more, but he was her friend and only saw her as the little squirt he always pulled out of one scrap after the other.
"Don't you worry about me, squirt. Now drop that robe and hold still while I see to these."
Nikita did so, and a tense silence fell between them, only interspersed by their combined breathing. She winced a few times, as his nimble fingers smeared the ointment over her wounds, and he murmured his husky apologies. His hot breath skittered across her slick flesh, and Nikita swallowed her groan.
"What's in that stuff?" she finally asked to break the tension and to distract herself from the tingles of awareness his touch created.
"Oh, this and that. It's an old family recipe. It aids the healing process and staves off infection. Works better than any of that new fandangled mumbo jumbo as my grandfather would have said."
She heard the wistful note in his voice and turned slightly to see his expression. The action exposed her breasts, and she made a hasty grab for the robe to pull it up over her front. Again, Raoul's hands on her tightened and then released. He hastily wrenched his eyes up to her face and sat back on his haunches, before straightening up. She hadn't realized that he had been kneeling on the floor behind her, and the thought of this big strong man on his knees for her made her feel quite light-headed.
Raoul wiped his hands on the hand towel and then screwed the lid back on the old-fashioned jam jar that held the family ointment.
"We'll have to reapply that several times more overnight, for maximum effect, so I'm afraid you're stuck here with me for the foreseeable future."
"I don't want to impose on you, if—"
"Don't be an idiot." He cut off her protest with a wave of his large hand. "If you think for one minute that I would let you walk out of here, after what almost happened to you tonight, then you're insane. You're staying right here with me. You can take the bed, and I'll sleep on the couch."
"You can't sleep on the couch." The thought of his six foot five frame sandwiched on this couch was ridiculous. "You're far too big. I'll take the couch. I can't turf you out of your own bed."
"And you can't sleep on the couch. Your back needs tender care. It's not up for discussion. You're on my bed."
He crossed his arms and clenched his jaw, but Nikita was in no mood to back down from this. She could be just as stubborn if she had to be.
"Fine, then you'll sleep in there with me. I'm sure a man with your reputation has a nice big bed, and I won't take up much room at all." Her voice wavered slightly as his face grew murderous, but she plowed on regardless. "So that's sorted then."
"This is far from sorted." Raoul was growling again, and Nikita thanked the universe she was still seated, as she very much doubted her legs would have been able to carry her right now. He bent, putting his hands either side of her on the back of the couch, until she had to lean backwards to escape him.
"What reputation, squirt?"

Author Bio:
Glutton for punishment would be a good description for Doris... at least that's what she hears on an almost daily basis when people find out that she has a brood of nine children, ranging from adult to toddler and lives happily in a far too small house, cluttered with children, pets, dust bunnies, and one very understanding and supportive husband. Domestic goddess she is not.
There is always something better to do after all, like working on the latest manuscript and trying not to scare the locals even more than usual by talking out loud to the voices in her head. Her characters tend to be pretty insistent to get their stories told, and you will find Doris burning the midnight oil on a regular basis. Only time to get any peace and quiet and besides, sleep is for wimps.
She likes to spin sensual, sassy, and sexy tales involving alpha heroes to die for, and heroines who give as good as they get. From contemporary to paranormal, BDSM to F/F, and Ménage, haunting love stories are guaranteed.
