REVIEW: BLOOD AND FIRE BOOK 2 OF THE TALBOT TRILOGY

Blood and Fire: Book Two of the Talbot Trilogy by Tori L. Ridgewood

Book Synopsis:

What chance does one witch have against five vampires? Alone, not much. But Rayvin’s allies are gathering…

The battle between good and evil supernatural forces heats up in the long, cold November nights of the former mining town. But how will Rayvin’s motley crew of spellcasters and shapeshifters cope when they discover the threat they face is even greater than they imagined?

Blood and Fire is available for sale on AmazonSmashwords, and Lulu.

The Talbot Trilogy:

0. Mist and Midnight (prequel)

1. Wind and Shadow

2. Blood and Fire

3. Crystal and Wand

About the Author:

After her first heartbreak, Tori found solace in two things: reading romance novels and listening to an after-dark radio program called Lovers and Other Strangers. Throughout the summer and fall of 1990, the new kid in town found reading fiction and writing her own short stories gave her a much needed creative outlet. Determined to become a published author, Tori amassed stacks of notebooks and boxes of filed-away stories, most only half-finished before another idea would overtake her and demand to be written down. Then, while on parental leave with her second baby, one story formed and refused to be packed away. Between teaching full-time, parenting, and life in general, it would take almost seven years before the first novel in her first trilogy would be completed. In the process, Tori finally found her stride as a writer.

At present, on her off-time, Tori not only enjoys reading, but also listening to an eclectic mix of music as she walks the family dog (Skittles), attempts to turn her thumb green, or makes needlework gifts for her friends and family members. She loves to travel, collect and make miniature furniture, and a good cup of tea during a thunderstorm or a blizzard. Under it all, she is always intrigued by history, the supernatural, vampire and shapeshifter mythology, romance, and other dangers.

Tori is currently working on Crystal and Wand: Book Three of The Talbot Trilogy. She lives in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Canada with her husband and two children. She is a full-time teacher at a local high school.

Review:

Oh, Tori, no! You left book two with as much of a cliffhanger as you did book one! I can't believe you did it twice! Blood and Fire is the sequel to Wind and Shadow. When we last saw our beloved Rayvin, she has lost Grant, been bound to the vampire de Sade, and had no idea where help would come from next.

In the follow-up book, Rayvin finds herself practically addicted to de Sade between the sheets. I'm not really sure how one can despise a man with such burning and still be addicted to sex with him, but Rayvin sure is. She also finds herself just a wee bit pregnant. Part of her still pines for Grant, whom she thinks is dead after giving himself up to the sun.

Grant did get infected by de Sade at the end of Wind and Shadow. He just didn't turn. Instead, in her last ditch effort to save him, Ratvin used sex magic with de Sade to turn Grant into a werewolf. Poor Grant has been through a lot, but finding another wolf in the woods, Solomon, helps him find his way back to the right path.

I loved this book as much as I did the first. It's a little sexy, a little dangerous, and a whole lot of exciting. The external and internal conflicts are tense and the consequences have the potential to be dire. All the characters show some personal flaws, but really, who's perfect? This is a great adventure story for older teens on up to adults who love a good vampire tale. I can't wait for the third and final installment of the Talbot Trilogy! I'm giving Blood and Fire 4.5 stars!

Excerpt:

“What kind of maniac tortures his lover?” she whispered. Her throat was still hoarse from screaming.
“Some people find they enjoy what you call ‘torture’,” he countered. Supporting her body with his, so her chin was secured against his shoulder, de Sade slid his hands under her sweater to unfasten her bra.
The confident movement of his hands against the taught, sensitive skin of her back was making her temperature rise. He lowered her brassiere away from her chest, gently reaching up the sleeves of her sweater to thread the straps through so he could pull the black lace garment from under her clothing. De Sade was moving with deliberate care, taking his time, and he could probably tell from the rise in her pheromones that it was turning her on in spite of herself.
How could this be happening to me?
She couldn't stand it.
Her systems may have been weakened by electric shock, and her magick worn down by pregnancy, but Rayvin refused to give in.
As the vampire continued lazily undressing her, she gritted her teeth and focused on a drawer next to the stove.
The handle shook for a moment, before the drawer slid open and released a large carving knife that hovered in the air. Rayvin lifted her chin from de Sade’s shoulder, leaving room for the knife to ease itself next to the vampire’s neck. The tip positioned itself under his earlobe.
De Sade paused for a moment. “You can threaten me all you like, but the truth is that I am stronger than you. You cannot help but be affected by me.” He ripped the front of her hoodie in one smooth gesture, tearing the fabric away from her body.
Rayvin sat straighter in the remains of her hoodie. The t-shirt she was wearing underneath did little to conceal the way her breasts had swollen with her pregnancy. De Sade stepped away from the hovering knife to remove his own shirt, and she directed her eyes at another drawer.
The vampire smiled at the peeler she sent toward his ribs. It pressed against his skin but did not penetrate.
“You don’t have the heart for it, love. You’re not a killer.”
The cupboards flung themselves open, and all of her mugs and glasses hurled themselves to the ceiling. The vampire didn't even flinch at the noise of their shattering. Hundreds of shards and jagged fragments aimed in his direction.
Rayvin’s voice was low, but clear.
“Leave now, before I cut you into a thousand pieces.”
De Sade unbuckled his trousers, let them fall, and stepped out of them. He hadn’t bothered wearing any underwear. “You don’t really mean that, now do you? I have something you want.”
His body never failed to shock her with its magnificence. Perfectly sculpted muscles. Pale, but hairy where a man should be. His arousal was clear. Rayvin felt herself growing wet, her whole being fighting to draw closer to him. Her hands clenched around the edge of the table in a last-ditch effort to hold on to herself.
“I don’t want you.”
She sent her fury toward a shard of porcelain. It obeyed her command, darting past the vampire to slice a thin line on his cheek. A single drop of dark blood trickled down his cheek.
He held her gaze. “Now you and I both know that that is a lie.”
Rayvin took a deep breath and lowered her feet to the floor. She wasn’t quite strong enough to hold herself upright, but the table held firm against her weight. “I don't need you or want you in my life, asshole. I’m done with you. Get the fuck out of my house.”
De Sade clucked his tongue. “Haven't we always been honest with each other?” He kicked his pants aside, and then his shoes. “Before me, you were boring. Unimportant. I made you special when I chose you. I’ve given you a new purpose. And when I fuck you, I make your world explode.”
His words killed a little more of her confidence. How did he know exactly what to say to mess with her mind?
Rayvin glowered as she stepped toward him. Her weapons moved with her, closing in on his body so he was surrounded by a glittering cage of blades. De Sade looked down at her as she approached, but he didn’t move. Her throat ached and her body burned. “You’ve turned me into a fucking addict! I don’t want to be like this anymore!” Her voice cracked. “Get out! I’m taking back my invitation!”
De Sade laughed in her face. “It’s too late for that. Our bond is stronger than a broken invitation, and it is stronger than any of the magick you have attempted. You gave yourself to me of your own free will. There is nothing to be done.”
She roared at him, battering his chest with her fists as her tiny spears of glass and porcelain razed his skin. The vampire continued to laugh. He grabbed her wrists and held them away from them both as if she were a small child.
“Bastard!” Rayvin spat at him, her nails digging into her palms. Her voice attempted to produce a scream, but instead it could only rasp. “I hate you! I’ll kill myself if you touch me again!”
In a move so fast she couldn’t see it, de Sade had pinned her arms to her sides, shoved the table to one side, and forced her against the wall. His knee had spread her legs and he’d pressed the length of his body to hers even before the table he had pushed away had a chance to hit the floor, the elderly legs cracking and splintering on impact.
“You won’t do that, dearest Rayvin,” he whispered, nuzzling her nose with his. She fought the melting sensation in her loins, but her will was ebbing with every thrust of his hips against hers. “You love life too much. You are not destined for death by suicide. And as I told you before, you are allowed to hate me. This isn’t love. It’s fucking, and you want it with every inch of your sweet little body.”
His lips descended on hers, and the last of Rayvin’s self control fell away, along with the remains of her glassware. Her will drowned in a sea of passion, overwhelmed once again by the touch of his mouth and tongue. Somewhere in the back of her mind, reality screamed at her to fight it, but it was as though a screen had lowered between knowledge and sensation.
Sensation was all that mattered in the moment.

REVIEW: CRACK THE WHIP BY JENNY MAY

Crack The Whip (Dark Days Ranch 3)
Georgina’s seen both the good and the bad that comes from having mates. The love the bonding creates lasts a lifetime. But that’s just it. After she watches her mother die of a broken heart, the anxiety Georgina develops over bonding to Damien and Austin is well warranted. Can she get over her fear, or will she keep the pact with her brother that they’re better off alone?
Damien and Austin know they have to bring Georgina around to being their mate. After all, Damien sees the perfect submissive that Georgina is, and he wants her to embrace the life she’s been ordered to live by their alpha. But as things heat up between the three of them, a plea for Damien to take over The Big C leaves him with a tough decision. Does he try to become the alpha he’s always known himself to be, and risk making Georgina’s fear of losing one of her mates a possible reality? Or does he walk away from it all and face the consequences?

Review:

Georgie is very reluctant to develop her mating bond with Damien and Austin. Once her father died, Georgie and her brother watched her mother wither and die soon after. Not wanting to be like their mother, Georgie and her brother take a vow to never bond with a mate. However, Damien isn't going to take no for an answer, and Georgie likes it that way. Her brother's reaction turns very violent. Georgie's now in danger of being killed by her own brother over her broken vow.

Damien has been working security for the Dark Days Ranch pack and others. He's worked alone for years, and now it's time to settle down with his two mates. Convincing Georgie takes a little more effort, but that's not a problem for our hero. He's the Dom her submissive side can't wait to bow down to. But will he put being a reluctant a Alpha and take over a neighboring mismanages pack?

Austin is a wolf and use to having to follow his Alpha. What he doesn't count on is being submissive to Damien in bed. The threesome takes some time to get use to and he has a part to play in getting Georgie to accept both his and Damien's love and affection. But her brother is a problem. Would she blame him and let grief come between them if Austin is forced to kill her brother to protect her?

Crack the Whip has several interesting complex sub-plots going on at the same time. Georgie not only has to deal with Damien's potential fight to the death but also with her struggle to not be like her mother. She's ordered by the pack alpha to live with Austin and Damien, and although part of her can't wait to submit to Damien's demands, she really wants to bolt like a spooked horse. Then there's Damien, he has his own internal conflicts. He was born to be an Alpha in his own right. He just doesn't want the job. What would happen to Georgie if her worst fears were realized with his death? It's a lot of him to consider. Then there's Austin. He's a good fighter and strong wolf, but he's not yet in touch with his submissive side.

I enjoyed watching the characters work out their individual problems and finally find their happy medium. The bondage wasn't intense, but it certainly was hot! This one turned out to be a real page turner. I'm not sure I call this one a safe work read, but a quiet moment alone with a glass of wine would make for an interesting evening. Crack the Whip gets 4 stars!

REVIEW: TIGHENING THE ROPES BY JENNY MAY

Tightening the Ropes (Dark Days Ranch 2)
Knox has guarded his heart from ever getting close to anyone. Intelligence work was supposed to keep him away from people, but a pull to be closer to the ranch leads him to discover Lewis. With one look at the horse trainer, Knox can feel the walls he’s put up begin to crumble. The damage only gets worse when he gets pulled over by Officer Lynna Gordova. Upon sight, he knows the three are meant to be together.
But things aren’t as they appear with Lynna. What led her into law enforcement so long ago has returned in the form of their rival enemy. As things heat up between Dark Days and Hidden Hills, the three of them are thrown right into the middle of a fight Knox isn’t sure he’s ready for. Will the Alpha in him be ready to step up to the plate, or will Lynna’s long lost brother be able to convince her that his corrupt plans for her are in Lynna’s best interest?

Review:

Lynn is a human on the local police force. Lewis is a human working on the Dark Days Ranch. know is a werewolf intelligence agent for the Dark Days Pack. The three come together to form a bond that pushes them into an adventure no one expected. In this case, the adventure involves a vampire.

I like the premise of Tightening the Ropes. I did have a bit of trouble with how easily Lynna let go of her training as a cop to give into the magic. It's not a bad story or a badly written story. I've known a lot of cops. They tend to be no nonsense and very practical. They would struggle a bit more with the magic before giving in to it. Once I set aside my misgivings about Lynna, the rest of the story went by without much of a hitch.

Knox's abused past make loving and being loved a difficult thing. Only a great deal of patience and care on the part of his bonded partners can save him. We get to see the big tough loner turn into a real hero. Lewis and Lynna bring out the best in him.

Then there's Lewis. He's the steady glue holding it all together. We've all meet those sort of people. They're good at being the calming factor, the rock everyone leans one, and the one friend to call in a crisis. Although he is a human in a werewolf world, he takes the whole notion in great stride. Lewis turns out to be one of my favorite characters in the story.

I enjoyed the tension and Knox's anxiety. Those moments where he struggles with himself over his past and what it means for his future are insightful and interesting. The sex scenes certainly did raise the temperature of the room a few degrees. The ending leaves the reader with a happily-ever-after with an edge. The broken Knox becomes a healer. It's a nice touch. I give Tightening the Ropes 3.5 stars!

REVIEW: BREAK ME IN BY JENNY MAY

Break Me In (Dark Days Ranch 1)
Myles Baker thinks she has everything under control. That is, until she meets her mates, Logan Harrison and Ty. Paired with a human, and member of the enemy pack, Myles knows that things are about to get complicated for Dark Days. But that’s only the beginning of her problems. There’s a scandal that lies deep within Dark Days Ranch, and for years Myles and her brother have been able to hide it. But it’s only a matter of time before everything is exposed, and the true leader of Dark Days is revealed.
Between Ty and Logan, they’re quickly learning the secrets to their new pack. But they have trouble of their own. Logan isn’t who he seems, and Ty is dealing with his evil ex-Alpha, Samone. Can these three overcome their problems before everything catches up with them, or will Samone, the Alpha of Whiskey River Ranch, accomplish her take down of Dark Days?

Review:

What happens when you throw hot cowboys and sexy werewolves together? Jenny May's Dark Days Ranch series, that's what. And what a combination it is!

Myles and her Alpha brother have been keeping a dirty little secret for years. He's the big, tough alpha of the Dark Days Ranch werewolf pack, but is he really? Myles is his elder twin and, by rights, the packs Alpha. Magic may have ordained Myles an alpha, bu tit forgot to check with her as to whether or not she wanted the job. No one else seems to notice, as long as she keeps a lid on her power. But how long will that last when she finds her mates?

Ty is from a neighboring enemy pack. He, too, was born a werewolf and know Myles for what she really is. He's been a ladies man for just as long. When the magic draws him to Myles, he's happy to plot a way to take her back to his pack. He doesn't count on the magic drawing him together with Myles plus one. His other problem lies in what to do if she refuses to go with him. His pack isn't likely to take to kindly to a defection.

Logan is a human who happens to work on the Dark Days Ranch. He loves breaking horses and working with animals. He keeps a secret of his own. Something deep inside of him speaks to the animals. He knows just what they need to bend them to his will. Myles is no exception. The magic chooses him to be the third mate. One little problem. He's always been interested in men. Being attracted to Myles has throw him for a loop.

I enjoyed the complex dynamic for the relationships. Logan and Ty both have some soul searching and exploring to do. Myles is a virgin being guided by magic she has no control over. There are a few more secrets that make this an interesting read and will provide a number of plot twists and turns. The sex is hot, the story pace is quick, and the ending is just as satisfying. I'm giving Break Me In a full 4 stars!

J. ROSE ALLISTER IS HERE WITH DISOWNED COWBOYS

DISOWNED COWBOYS by J. Rose Allister
Book 1 of the LONE WOLVES OF SHAY FALLS series
Siren Publishing
Western/Paranormal/Menage/MMF

Blurb:
When Aimee gets lost during a hike, she finds more than refuge in a dark cave—she finds a chained and naked cowboy who claims to know who she is. Dillon and his partner, Kyle, are werewolves determined to become her mates. Just one problem—she shows up for her appointment with fate while wearing another man’s engagement ring.

Excerpt:
Before she could answer, Kyle turned her hand over and stared at the back of it. “What’s this?” he asked, thumbing the diamond so it slid back and forth.
Aimee pulled her hand away and glanced at the gem. “It’s an engagement ring.”
“A what?” Dillon spoke this time, his voice echoing loudly through the space. She turned to him to find his eyes wide. “You ain’t engaged.”
She could swear there was an edge of jealousy in the remark, and a tiny spark of pleasure ignited at the thought of his possessiveness. She couldn’t help but poke at the theory a little. “Why else would I be wearing a half-carat diamond on my wedding finger?” She waggled it at him for effect, then took a breath and decided to dive in with the rest. “In fact, he’s here with me. No doubt he’s searching for me right now. I should probably go.”
“Kyle,” Dillon said. “Are you hearin’ this?”
The other man shrugged. “I guarantee ain’t nobody out searchin’ for you tonight. It’s too dark and too wet.” He nodded at her ring. “If your Prince Charmin’ fiancĂ© is here with you, how is it you got separated and wound up with us?”
She frowned at the term. “I didn’t say he was Prince Charming. Or my fiancĂ©, to be honest. I got lost when I left him to use the bathroom and found a wolf intent on chasing me instead.”
Dillon chuckled. “If you were lookin’ for a bathroom out here, it’s no wonder you got lost.”
She snorted. “Not an actual bathroom. You know what I mean.”
“A wolf chased you?” Kyle’s hands were on his hips now.
“It was Caleb,” Dillon said. He winced and bent over a moment, as though he were in pain. “I smelled him on her. But he didn’t hurt her.”
Aimee frowned. “What is it with naming the wolves around here? Are you guys part of some wolf protection society or something?”
When she shot a look at Kyle, she saw that he, too, wore a pained grimace. “You ain’t completely wrong,” he said with some difficulty. “But I’m afraid we got bigger problems right now.”
“It’s comin’,” Dillon said. He was kneeling on all fours now. “I can feel it.”
Aimee blinked in confusion. “What’s coming?”
“Fight it,” Kyle said. “You don’t want to change now.”
The other man rolled his eyes. “Yeah, like that’ll help. Why didn’t I think of that?”
Dillon was shivering now, and Aimee stared down at him with a curious frown. “What’s wrong? Thought you said you don’t get cold.”
Kyle took her by the upper arms, and a tickle flickered in her stomach. “There ain’t time for proper explanations,” he said. “You’re just gonna have to believe that you were meant to be here, and we’re not gonna let anythin’ happen to you.”
“Shit.” Dillon was on the ground now, heaving in and out.
“Why are you telling me this?” Aimee pulled away from Kyle’s grasp and stepped back with a wary glance at Dillon. “What’s wrong with him?”
“She’s fuckin’ engaged, Kyle.” The gaze Dillon leveled on her glowed with yellow fire, and she gasped aloud.
“Easy, now,” Kyle said, dropping beside Dillon to sit cross-legged on the cave floor. “Breathe with me, partner. You can do this. It’s just the low moon.”
Dillon sat up but shook his head. “The waxin’ low moon. I can’t help it, Kyle. I keep thinkin’ about her marryin’ some jackass, and, damn it.”
She scowled at him. “Hey! David’s not a jackass.”
The mention of his name brought a throaty growl in response. Kyle launched into some weird New Age-style deep breathing with his palms facing up on his knees. “Just try,” he said.
Dillon shut his eyes and whooshed out some forceful breaths while he continued to quiver. Aimee gripped her elbows in her hands while she watched the bizarre display. What was the big deal about her engagement ring? Maybe he’d recently had a bad breakup and it brought back memories.
She stepped forward. “I didn’t agree to marry the guy yet.” The words surprised her as soon as they were out. Why should she feel a need to explain? She didn’t owe them anything.
“But you’re wearin’ his ring.” The hint of accusation in the tone was clear. “You let another man put his ring on your finger.”
A stab of anger shot through her. “So what?” Her volume dialed up enough for the words to bounce off the cave walls. “It’s my life, and I can do what I want with it. Just who the hell are you to comment on whether I get married or not?”
“Who am I?” Dillon rose up on his knees, his eyes gleaming with something feral that set her teeth on edge. “I am your mate.”
Her jaw fell open, but her shock at the bold claim was quickly overridden by the odd ripples forming along the surface of his skin.

About the author:
J. Rose Allister is the author of more than two dozen books, primarily erotic romance. If you ever spot her in public, don’t be alarmed if she’s wearing a dazed, deer-in-the-headlights look. She’s just writing the next scene in her head.
