REVIEW: THE SHOW BY JOHN HELDT

Blurb:

Seattle, 1941. Grace Vandenberg, 21, is having a bad day. Minutes after Pearl Harbor is attacked, she learns that her boyfriend is a time traveler from 2000 who has abandoned her for a future he insists they cannot share. Determined to save their love, she follows him into the new century. But just when happiness is within her grasp, she accidentally enters a second time portal and exits in 1918. Distraught and heartbroken, Grace starts a new life in the age of Woodrow Wilson, silent movies, and the Spanish flu. She meets her parents as young, single adults and befriends a handsome, wounded Army captain just back from the war. In THE SHOW, the sequel to THE MINE, Grace finds love and friendship in the ashes of tragedy as she endures the trial of her life.

Review:

The Show is a sequel to Heldt's The Mine. I know. When you go to Amazon, it says Northwest Passage #3, but trust me. It really is the sequel to #1, The Mine.

In The Show, we pick up with Grace following Joel's trail and finding her way in the year 2000. She arrives at a different date and uses the resources available to her to locate some of her former classmates. Obviously, she and Joel get together. They make a great life together, kids and all. I don't to give to much away, but Grace gets to be a time traveler again. She locates her long lost family in 1918.

I found the story interesting, although the pace was slower than The Mine. After thinking about it, I decided that was in part because I already knew that Grace and Joel ended up together. I just didn't know how far into the story I would have to go to get there. Patience is not a virtue I possess in great abundance and will in no way fault the author. The tale was very interesting, with a few twists and turns I didn't expect. Honestly, I kept waiting for Grace to be her own mother. She didn't exactly follow the usual sci-fi rule about not altering the timeline. In the end, I was left scratching my head over a few points and asking myself, "How could that have possibly worked out?"

All in all, I liked it. The head scratching at the end actually added to the mystery. The language and scenes are suitable for a general audience. Nothing very saucy is presented. Much like The Mine, this more of a science fiction time travel story than a romance. It just happens to have a romantic element that plays a part in the heroine's decision making process. Be sure to read book one first before tackling The Show. It will add a lot to the experience.

Lily had a crush on her brother's best friend, Derek for years - which led to their steamy night ten months ago in her bedroom. Now, Lily is going off to college and she and Derek are still going strong. However, when school starts, she realizes it's hard to maintain a relationship while also trying to live her own life. She and Derek find themselves falling apart and Lily has no idea where to turn.

Enter Jack. Everything about him is wrong for Lily and she knows it, but she can't stop herself from being attracted to him. When things implode with Derek, it's Jack who is there to pick up the pieces - and show Lily an entirely new set of experiences she didn't know she was missing.

Of course, Jack has his own problems and once Lily gets to know him better, she starts to wonder if she can handle all of Jack. When Derek reappears on the scene, Lily is forced to decide between two guys and herself. Can she find herself without losing the people who matter in the process?

See where it began in the short story, "Her Brother's Best Friend."

Excerpt:

He moves closer and already my body is responding. He smells like cigarettes and leather, two smells I never thought were sexy until now. I want to fall into his body, to be wrapped in his arms, and I fight it. It’s wrong and it makes no sense. I have everything I could ever want. Jack is just a distraction.

“I’m not that kind of girl,” I tell him.

He steps closer still and kisses my neck. His lips are soft, which is unexpected, and it sends a shiver through me. Jack brings me in to his chest. I can feel his heart beating; it’s quickening and it matches mine. I feel his tongue sliding down along my collarbone. There is nothing like this, but I need him to stop. And yet, I never want him to stop. “I’d love to know exactly what kind of girl you are.”

Almost as if they are not my own, my hands slip between his jacket and his shirt. The heat of his skin burns me even through the fabric of his clothes. His lips continue to travel downward, but as they reach the curve of my breasts, something in me wakes up. I tear myself away from him and back up a few inches.

“I have a boyfriend,” I repeat. “I can’t do this.”

“Where is he?” Jack asks. His eyes are burning.

“What?”

“Where is your boyfriend? You’ve mentioned him before, but you run into me a lot for someone who’s so in love.”

REVIEW: A HELL HOUND'S FIRE BY SIOBHAN MUIR

Blurb:

Love can be found in the most unlikely places, even the heart of a Hell Hound.

Alex MacLaren figures he'll never find love again after his mate dies. As one of the rare Hell Hound werewolves, his chances are slim to none. And slim went home. When the local Morukai shaman calls on him to protect a lovely Irish werewolf and her young son from demons, he can't help but take the job.

Sarah Flanagan is desperate to save her son Liam from the deadly monster trailing them, but she's out of options and places to hide. She lost her mate the last time she encountered a demon, and with Liam depending on her, the stakes are far higher this time. After meeting Alex, she's not sure about the Hell Hound, but she’s no fool. He’s their best hope for survival... and hers for another chance at love.

This is a short story introducing Cloudburst, Colorado, a new series by Siobhan Muir.

Review:

This charming introduction to the Cloudburst, Colorado series is a great look at love's second chances. With a troubled hero and a reluctant heroine, we get to see two people take those tentative first steps back into a relationship. They must deal with not only their pasts but the present dangers of a demon stalking the Flanagans.

I really enjoyed this story. There were sweet moments and tense ones blended up with the romance. The hero has an interesting back story, and the heroine is a single mom with all the usual problems, plus a demon. The length isn't long, but it makes an excellent read for those without a lot of time to spare. The language and the sex aren't very graphic. This would make a good read for most romance readers. Whether you're sitting in the pick-up line waiting on the kids or on your lunch break, this is great way to spend the time. This introduction story is a free read on Smashwords and Amazon. Don't forget to pick up the sequel, The Beltane Witch!
