Jayna is about to graduate from high school and
embark on an exciting journey in higher education – or so she thinks. In the
wee hours of one fateful night she finds herself in the middle of a battle with
demons. She assumes it’s a nightmare; a young warrior, Ethan Wells, convinces
her otherwise. Jayna discovers that she is an evolved human who can travel
between dimensions and is also capable of extinguishing demons. She is a prime
candidate for the Astral army. An innocent first-love blossoms between Jayna
and Ethan. They become partners in the Astral army against demons and other
forms of evil. Ethan is in charge of her training; they spend the next few
years as carefree college students by day, demon fighters by night. However,
there is a small glitch in their happiness: They are forbidden by the Astral
Masters to see each other on Earth. As much as they love one another, they
cannot be together in their physical forms. However, the Astral Plane is about
to have a first.
Review:
I picked up my copy as a free download on Smashwords. Be careful, though. Astral Ordinance Ayshen's Story is also free, and I accidentally downloaded it first. If you do that, the short won't make sense, in the grand scheme of things.
The bulk of the story is all about set up. Getting to know the characters and their mission takes a lot of time. In fact, we don't really get to see much in the way of action. There's a cliff hanger at the very end, setting up book two nicely. I will warn you, dear reader, about all the head hopping. Pay close attention to who is thinking and speaking. Then there is the telepathy. Make sure you pay attention to who is speaking and who is listening.
I can't say this is a sweet romance, as some implied sex is involved. The language is relatively mild and written on a level most kids should understand. The only short fall I see is the lack of contractions in the speech. Younger readers may not mind as much as an older reader might. On the whole, this would make a good book for young adults, teens, and advanced tweens. I wouldn't have a problem giving it to my kids to read. If you are looking for a clean work read, this is a good selection.
